CHAPTER 15: THE ROAD TO WUDANG

The land cruiser’s engine hummed steadily as they descended from the monastery into the valleys of central China, leaving behind the scene of their hard-won victory. Trevor sat in the passenger seat, still processing the changes that came with advancing beyond level five. His enhanced perception seemed sharper, more integrated, and the Buddha’s Tooth rested against his chest with a warmth that felt almost smug.

“The next safe house is two hundred kilometers southeast,” Pemba reported from the driver’s seat, consulting a hand-drawn map that looked like it had been updated by multiple people over many years. “But we should avoid the main highways. Threshold will have eyes on all major routes by now.”

“How long until we reach Wudang?” Trevor asked, and internally, he cringed at the question. Like a child asking, “Are we there yet, Dad?” and it was not the impression he wanted to convey. Pemba’s aloof, but warming, attitude did nothing to dispel the feeling, which grew as Pemba eyed him askance.

Trevor decided to rather watch the countryside roll past through his enhanced vision. Even the mundane landscape seemed layered now, showing swirls and traces of spiritual energy flowing through ancient paths between villages.

“Four days if we travel carefully,” Yangchen replied from the back seat. “Longer if we encounter complications.”

She always seemed to sense when the two men were at odds. She leaned forward, her silver-white aura flickering with concern. “Trevor, how are you feeling? That final effort you pulled was…”

She left it hanging. There weren’t words to describe what she had seen him do. Literally an army of thugs had melted away before this man, and those remaining had fled. It was like watching the legends of old coming to life. The very mountains sang with his accomplishment.

Trevor flexed his fingers, feeling the increased resonance capacity like a deeper reservoir of potential. “Different. Stronger, but also like I need to relearn how to use everything. The resonance flow is more complex now. But when I tapped into the mountain… I just don’t have the words to describe it.”

Trevor wanted to say he had felt like a God, but knew that would come over as presumptuous. A lot about that experience needed to be unpacked, but truly, they had all been lucky, or as was becoming increasingly certain, faith and devotion made miracles happen.

“That’s normal,” Yangchen assured him. “Each major advancement requires adjustment time. Your abilities haven’t just grown more powerful; they’ve become more sophisticated. Both Pemba and I reached Apprentice levels at Kailash, but you are doing the heavy lifting and getting the tiger’s share of the experience. I am glad to see you have caught up to our level. Just try to take some time to acclimatize. I think you would benefit from it.”

Trevor resisted the urge to correct her. Lion’s share or Tiger’s share, it didn’t matter. They were in Asia after all. It actually fits better.

To correlate what she had said, Trevor activated his Veil Glimpsing ability, immediately noticing the improvement.
